- I took a School of Rock class where I learned how to write lyrics, alongside other music-making process. I’ve always had an issue with not being able to release my emotion, and lyric-writing could help me with these while also being a creative outlet.

I learned how to choose song names, and how to learn something in-depth in a short amount of time.

I reorganized the poem arrangement, cutting out words and making it fit a 4/4 rhythm. I started working with Jared to write notes to the lyrics.

- deliberate practice is constantly reaching outside the comfort zone of the student, so it requires maximum effort in order for it to be pulled off. the deliberate practice connects the weak/vulnerable neurons in the brains and strengthens them. the scientist/researcher that decided to explore her lifelong dream of being a singer was able to grow tremendously in a short span with a professional guide, and she ended up selling millions of copies of her remake.

- 1M Song Title: consider the two listening situations, where the listener doesn’t know the song title(parties, radio) and wants to discover it, and where the listener does know the title (youtube recommendation, social media post with autoplay) and don’t know if it’s worthwhile to click on it.
- 1. ‘been a while’ factor, songs that have phrases that are said in daily life. whenever the phrase is said it brings you back to the song (Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson)
- 2. ‘duh’ factor, song titles that are obvious to the listener after they learn the name. it’s a clear title.
- 3. ‘wtf’ factor, for those looking for new songs. it’s eye-catching. use power words.
- 4. don’t use passive descriptions, like ‘love song’ or ‘drum song’. not eye-catching enough. In the same vein, don’t use numbers either (unless it has emotional values, like 1989) or acronyms.

- I watched SongExploder episode for the Sparks and Arlo Parks. Sparks discusses writing an unconventional song through storytelling. They had a story (a guy has a thing for a flight attendant and that made him fantasize about being a WW2 bomber) and worked from there, pulling out lyrics that elicit an emotional response. For Arlo Parks, she discusses the suicidal thought and depression of her friend and specifically elaborates on how she used her words sparsely (much like the lack of emotion for people suffering from depression) and how much she’d like to help her. I personally relate to that, as I’ve had friends talk about their depression or experiences with other mental illnesses. Every time I wished that I could just hug them and make their problems disappear.

Rick Beato explored TOOL‘s work, specifically Schism. The music starts off with a bass beat, then it separates into two different beats that work together, then evolves into individual riffs that are subdivided. Throughout the music, the drum and guitar are stronger than the vocal. The drum is rather elaborate and provides more than the bottom layer in the music.

I watched the Deconstructed video on Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”. In the video, there’s a scene that goes through how he created the beats and the heavy thump sound and shows how he randomly placed one drum part at a time. I think the hi-hat trill(?) placement was remarkable, and it gives the song the light energy that works as both a trap and country music.

- I watched the four videos on HookTheory’s songwriting series (sultry sax song). It takes me through the steps of building a song, from bottom-up to the melody which is the final piece of the music. Thinking on this, I realized how music is developed from the ground layer yet the listeners perceive the melody as the most important.

An Example: The Swift Formula – One Note Melodies
There are only three parts to a pop song. These are repeated throughout the song to create the emotion the listeners get. Limiting yourself to smaller options is also a good choice since restrictions mean more rigidity to work with. Chords aren’t a consideration when the song is being written, but when the music is transcribed for instruments.

Generate the base chords first, and then modify some starting there. Write the chords first before you create the melody since chords are the melodies but ‘together’. Try to read the speed of the chords you’ve already made, and make the melody based off of that.
